COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city of Grand Rapids is negotiating to purchase the former Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center on Monroe Ave NW and is asking developers to submit proposals to redevelop the 3.5-acre riverfront site into a community center, greenspace and housing — the project will offer new opportunities for local residents.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Acrisure will lay off 200 Grand Rapids accounting employees early next year as it adopts new artificial intelligence technology & has 100 other job openings in West Michigan. CEO Greg Williams said the layoffs are a strategic shift to boost digital services while offering severance and outplacement support.  MLive
  • Second Vibess, an upcycling business on Division in Grand Rapids, won one of two $100,000 prizes at ArtPrize with its project 'Scraps' that featured a sustainable art gallery and a fashion show with 20 recycled looks — the owners plan to invest the prize money to expand their business.  FOX 17
  • Local officials and business leaders unveiled Monopoly: Grand Rapids Edition on Oct. 9 at John Ball Zoo—replacing Atlantic City squares with local landmarks and businesses in a game that highlights our city's unique culture.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The inaugural episode of Behind the Curtain previewed the new Broadway musical 'Water for Elephants' at DeVos Performance Hall. The show opened Tuesday and will run until Oct. 12 while cast members say it offers a mix of score—choreography and circus elements that bring community and spectacle together.  WOOD TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Rapids Public Schools is asking the community to suggest names for a new $36 million elementary school in northeast Grand Rapids that will replace Aberdeen Academy and Palmer Elementary when they close in 2027. Community suggestions are due through Dec. 19 on the Reimagine GRPS Dashboard — a committee will narrow the list before the final name is recommended to the Board of Education — and the new school will serve pre-kindergarten to fifth grade.  MLive

  • Governor Whitmer signed Michigan’s full annual budget plan today one day before the short-term funding plan expired — the plan allocates $51.8 billion for state departments, $24.1 billion for school aid, and $2 billion for road improvements.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Aaron Torres, 39, from Highland beat a rare testicular cancer that spread and later led to a full lung transplant at Corewell Health—he was the program’s 400th lung transplant recipient. He now urges early detection and works with his doctors to keep his lungs healthy with an 80% chance of five-year survival.  WOOD TV

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Former Pistons great Isiah Thomas will host a champagne tasting at the Downtown Market’s Greenhouse on November 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.—he will feature four champagnes from his Cheurlin brand with charcuterie, artisanal cheeses and gourmet accoutrements while sharing his journey from the NBA to his business venture.  WOOD TV

  • Soccer Rebellion will host the 2025 OOSA Classic, a three-day youth soccer tournament at Brewer Park in Byron Center from Nov. 7—9.
