COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Grand Rapids Boys & Girls Club received a $1.2 million grant from Michigan to install a new roof, HVAC, LED lighting, solar blinds, solar panels, and a high-tech generator—measures that help cut energy costs and maintain safe programs. The club is also planning a $4.6 million renovation of the Seidman Club—set to reopen by next spring once fundraising is complete.  WOOD TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grand Rapids will host several Halloween events this month—haunted attractions at Abandoned Acres Farm in Sparta, a family-friendly Spooky Forest at Cannonsburg, and a zombie dash 5K on October 25, along with a Pumpkin Smash n’ Bash at Girls Farm Market from October 25-26. A Lord of the Rings screening with a live soundtrack will take place at DeVos Performance Hall on October 31 starting at 7 p.m.  MLive

  • A U.S. Census Bureau report shows that from 2012 to 2022 the divorce rate fell by 28% while Michigan's rate stayed below the national average. Marriage numbers stayed steady except for a drop in 2021 — a trend that may affect how families plan for the future.  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cherry Health opened a new recovery center inside its Southeast Side Health Center at 2303 Kalamazoo Ave SE to offer substance abuse screenings, counseling, and harm reduction services funded by $500,000 in opioid settlement funds. The center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.—providing support for local patients.  MLive
  • In East Grand Rapids, Pinkn’ Patch, a nonprofit supporting families affected by breast cancer, has launched a pumpkin patch where volunteers will paint 3,000 pumpkins this fall to fund services like rides, laundry, and meal delivery starting in December. The organization will also host its Pinkn’ Prize pumpkin decorating contest with an awards party on October 13—contestants must include pink in their designs.  WOOD TV

  • On Wednesday, October 8, The Orchards at Red Barn in Lowell, a fifth-generation family orchard, offered a fall event that combined farm-to-table treats such as hard cider flights, donut sundaes, and savory flatbreads with traditional activities like a petting zoo, corn maze, and apple picking. The market—expanded by acquiring a local hard cider brand—operates year-round from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 1 p.m. on Sundays.  MLive

  • In Week 7, four Grand Rapids prep football teams won key games, with Muskegon, GR Catholic Central, Unity Christian and West Catholic set to secure outright league championships next week—Hudsonville moved closer to defending its OK Red title with a win over East Kentwood.  MLive
  • On Friday, four high school teams in Grand Rapids won their Week 7 games with last-second drives—West Ottawa was one of the teams that secured its win on the final drive. Several contests went to overtime and ended on the final play, thrilling local fans.  MLive
