COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The new playground at D.W. Richardson Park in Plainfield Township opened on Oct. 10 — it has slides, a climbing wall, a lookout area and a swing set. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk and also features baseball diamonds, shuffleboard, basketball courts and a pavilion.  MLive
  • A neighborhood near Rockford hosted an accessible Halloween trick-or-treat event with flat sidewalks and curbside tables offering candy and sensory-friendly toys—making it easier for children with mobility, sensory, and neurological disabilities to join in the fun. Organizer Curtis Gross partnered with Anni’s Army Foundation and locals praised the calm setting, while plans to expand the event next year are already underway.  WOOD TV
  • John Ball Zoo (updated on Oct. 9) has finished its spooky makeover and will kick off Zoo Goes Boo (Friday) for visitors to enjoy fall attractions.  WOOD TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Michigan couple Amy and Frank Stabile turned their 40-acre property into a home and a haunted attraction known as Abandoned Acres Farm, where over 120 staff work on security, set design, admissions, and scare acting. They retired from their past jobs to run a year-round operation that draws thousands during Halloween and attends industry events to improve the experience.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • A West Michigan dental clinic provided free dental care to military members on Oct. 10th after their benefits were reduced during the government shutdown. The clinic helped service members receive needed treatment in the area.  WOOD TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Runners in Lowell braved fog and chilly weather on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. as they raced in the inaugural Fallasburg 5K at Fallasburg Park—running past a historic covered bridge and village before finishing with donuts and cider, while about 300 runners and hundreds of spectators helped make the event a success with plans to grow next year.  WOOD TV
