- ➤ The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired is hosting a White Cane Awareness walk today at 10 a.m. in Calder Plaza to show how people with visual impairments can safely navigate the city — the event aims to build support for better accessibility. WOOD TV
- ➤ Renew Mobility will host 'Fowling to Keep Em Rolling'—a Halloween-themed bowling event for families on October 22 from 5:30-8:30 PM at Fowling Warehouse in Grand Rapids—to support children with mobility disabilities. The $25 event will feature bowling, a costume contest, and a raffle. FOX 17
- ➤ A white cane awareness walk is planned today from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. starting at Calder Plaza to support visually impaired residents in safely navigating Grand Rapids, and ABVI with Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital will guide participants along a route from Ottawa Avenue to Monroe Center, Monroe Avenue, then Lyon Street before returning to Calder — the event is free and open to the public. - ➤ Popeyes is building a new restaurant at 7522 Main St. in Georgetown Township as construction crews prepare the 2,668-square-foot site featuring a drive-thru. Franchisee Aby Groups is developing the restaurant—site plans were approved on Aug. 20 and it will be the chain’s sixth in the Grand Rapids area. MLive

- ➤ Grand Rapids Public Museum is celebrating Anishinaabe Culture Day today with hands-on activities, new murals, and a scavenger hunt for school groups and community visitors. A film series with Native artists and documentary screenings will run on Oct 18 — tickets cost $2 with admission. MLive

- ➤ More than 1,000 Forest Hills community members signed a petition asking the Board to bring back athletic trainer Mary Pennington at Forest Hills Northern High School, as senior Eli Macauley said one trainer is not enough for over 600 athletes. The district said it signed a contract with a third-party vendor for four trainers for next school year—one for each high school—despite local safety concerns. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The state budget approved $2 million to upgrade the Grand Rapids Art Museum and $1.8 million to build a covered arena for agricultural shows at Lowell’s Grand Agricultural Center—museum updates include replacing damaged HVAC grates and modernizing obsolete systems, while the arena project is expected to take about 18 months to complete. - ➤ The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority approved a $111,000 investment to plant 50 trees this fall and 50 in the spring to help the city reach a 40% tree canopy cover goal. The contractors will maintain the new trees for two years and update the urban canopy inventory. ABC 13

- ➤ Emily Martens, an insurance expert at Priority Health, said individuals needing new insurance should start early since open enrollment is Nov. 1 through Jan. 15 and Medicare enrollment is Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 (she advised checking that doctors are in network before choosing a plan). WOOD TV
- ➤ A Corewell Health memory care clinic in Grand Rapids is now offering testing (in English and Spanish) to better detect dementia in Latino patients who get less accurate results from translated tests. Doctors say this service will help guide treatment by addressing language barriers (and cultural differences) that delay proper diagnosis. WOOD TV

- ➤ Grand Rapids viewers can vote until Thursday at noon to pick one of four student athletes for a live interview on 13 On Your Sidelines—after Spring Lake's Landon O'Donnell had an impressive game, he was passed over to give another nominee a chance.
