  • City officials installed a commemorative street sign honoring Dr. MaLinda Sapp at the corner of Madison Avenue SE and Alger Avenue on Sunday—she founded Lighthouse Full Life Center Church with her husband and served as a principal and professor until her death in 2010.  WOOD TV
  • For nearly 30 years, 69-year-old Dave Tanis has volunteered his truck and commercial license to haul heavy instruments from Michigan to competitions across America—logging over 30,000 miles while helping the Jenison Marching Band build teamwork among students. He continues to support the band free of charge to give back to the community that shaped his family’s memories.  MLive
  • Local nonprofit Be A Ruby in Grandville is preparing for a harsh winter by asking for donations of winter coats, boots and blankets to help homeless people in Kent and Ottawa counties. Volunteers serve 150 to 200 meals every weekend, and the organization warns that supplies are limited & extra support is needed.  WOOD TV

  • Accel Digital Solutions will change a former movie theater in Plainfield Township into the Great Lakes Pickleball Club where players can watch DigiPro pickleballs being made—this plan will help bring sporting goods making back to West Michigan.   • The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is asking community help to find missing K9 Soka (pronounced So-kuh), a friendly German shorthair mix last seen on Sunday morning 1.5 miles southwest of Peacock Township Hall in Manistee National Forest near Irons.  WOOD TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan launched its first Microplastics Awareness Week yesterday — state officials organized cleanups and a virtual summit to tackle growing plastic pollution in our water, air and land. The week will continue until Oct. 26 and includes a $2 million boost for research on microplastics in the Great Lakes.  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pine Rest opened a new clinic to expand psychiatry outpatient services for Medicaid patients, offering quicker care amid funding delays caused by the government shutdown — officials said the move cuts wait times and helps more patients get treated. The provider is building a pediatric behavioral health center that will open in 2026 — a step to further broaden care options.  WOOD TV
