  • An 11-year-old girl was adopted by her aunt and uncle in a Kent County courtroom on Oct.17 (adoption day) as court officials finalized the legal process (confirming the adoption).  WOOD TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • East Grand Rapids mother Erica Dunten was hit twice by e-bikes near Reeds Lake, sparking safety concerns as city officials met on Oct 6 and discussed plans to enforce helmet rules and expand bike lanes on Oct 20—officials aim to protect both riders and pedestrians.  FOX 17

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dozens of businesses along Wealthy Street in Eastown have signed a letter asking the city to modify a plan that would remove street parking to add bike lanes — the design, set for 2026 to 2028, could cut up to 50 parking spots and pose challenges for deliveries and those with mobility issues. A city spokesperson said they will review these concerns from the recent meeting before finalizing the project.  WOOD TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • NBA legend Isiah Thomas will host an exclusive champagne tasting event at the Downtown Market greenhouse on November 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.—guests will sample four premier champagnes from his Cheurlin line and enjoy a curated grazing table with artisanal cheeses and charcuterie. The event does not allow autograph signing and tickets cost $130, which include food, tax, gratuity and service charge.  MLive

  • AAA reported that the average price of regular gas in Michigan dropped to $2.79 per gallon, with drivers in Grand Rapids paying about $2.69 and saving 41 cents from last month and 49 cents from last year+the agency warned prices may fall more if oil costs drop further.  ABC 13

  • Teacher Marcia Cisler (32 years at Kelloggsville Middle and High Schools) was surprised today when her students and the varsity cheer team honored her as Teacher of the Week. She said the celebration filled her heart and reminded her why she has dedicated her life to teaching.  ABC 13
  • The East Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education appointed David Hall— a Grand Rapids attorney— as the new trustee at its Oct. 17 meeting to fill the vacancy left by Amy Turner-Thole’s resignation. He will serve until Dec. 31 and may run for election in Nov. 2026.  MLive
  • Michigan State Police have unveiled three free online toolkits to help schools plan for emergencies before and during crises. The toolkits, covering clear communication, emergency preparedness and online safety practices, were developed with federal funding and input from educators — and they will be used during Safe Schools Week, including local training events in Grand Rapids — to help districts plan ahead.  ABC 13

  • After months of construction, the new Fruit Ridge Avenue bridge in Walker is set to open next Monday, Oct. 27, as crews finish adding signage and pavement. MDOT and the city of Walker partnered on the multimillion-dollar project to replace the 1961 two-lane bridge with five lanes + added pedestrian and cycling paths.  WOOD TV
  • Michigan state gaming officials sent letters last month to bars, clubs, and veteran centers across West Michigan asking them to remove casino-style machines that break state law—violations can lead to up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. Local operators in Grand Rapids now face sharp revenue drops and worry about finding replacements for these popular machines.  WOOD TV

  • Network180 in Grand Rapids offers coordinated specialty care to help people ages 15 to 35 who are experiencing their first psychosis diagnosis by providing one-on-one therapy, peer support, education and employment services, medication management, and family education.
