- ➤ HopCat, a popular craft beer bar with 950 employees and locations including two in Grand Rapids, has been sold to Chicago-based Uncommon Equity. CEO Craig Stage said the sale—undisclosed in value—will not change the restaurant’s focus on great food and craft beer and also includes Stella’s Lounge on Commerce Ave. MLive
- ➤ Meijer Inc. opened a new Meijer Express gas station and convenience store at 1710 28th St. SE in Grand Rapids — the build replaces a smaller store at 2900 Kalamazoo Ave. SE and is situated on the former Christian Reformed Church headquarters site that was demolished earlier this year; the station now has 14 fuel pumps, ready-to-eat meals, and a gift section with space for future developments. - ➤ General Motors is laying off 1,700 workers in Michigan and Ohio as it adjusts production for electric vehicles due to slower demand. The company said the cuts include both permanent and temporary layoffs and that production will be paused at select facilities until mid next year. WOOD TV
- ➤ Howard Miller—an iconic family clock maker in Zeeland—will open its facility at 860 E. Main St. on Saturday, Nov 1 at 8 a.m. to sell its remaining handcrafted clocks as a thank-you to West Michigan customers; the sale ends at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov 8 and comes before the planned shutdown in 2026. - ➤ Restaurant Week GR will take place from November 7 to 15 as 72 local restaurants offer fixed-price menus of $25, $35, or $45 — diners will use a digital pass to vote for top chefs, unlock prizes, and support culinary education. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Grand Rapids Public Schools and the teachers union signed four tentative agreements on October 29 — none of which include pay raises. WOOD TV
- ➤ Grand Rapids Public Schools teachers are working without contracts as the district and the Grand Rapids Education Association reached tentative agreements on a school calendar and benefits—including a sick day donation program, automatic union dues deductions, and plans to explore professional development days for next year. Salary negotiations remain stalled with the district offering a 4.5% raise while the union demands a 7.5% increase. FOX 17
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A study from Michigan Medicine showed that routine childhood and adolescent immunizations in Michigan fell between 2017 and 2023, with HPV vaccination increases slowing over the period. Counties with lower income and more uninsured people saw steeper drops—pointing to a need for targeted efforts to boost vaccination rates. ABC 13
- ➤ Dr. Celia Egan — Director of Obesity Medicine at True Women's Health — says that eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep are key during and after menopause because hormone changes can shift body fat and stress the heart.
