  • Kids across West Michigan are celebrating Halloween today as they dress in costumes and search for candy. Several families joined events like Trunk or Treats — sharing photos of their festive celebrations.  WOOD TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Van Eerden Foodservice has expanded its reach by opening a $51 million distribution center in Fort Wayne. The new facility covering 181,000 square feet—completed last month and opened this week—stores frozen, refrigerated and room temperature food and has space for 72 semi-trailers and 100 parking spots.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Phoenix Theatres at Woodland Mall in Kentwood will show Wicked: For Good nonstop for 33 hours starting at 2 p.m. on November 20 — the marathon runs until the early morning before the theater returns to its normal schedule.  FOX 17
  • A local legend surrounds Hell's Bridge, an abandoned metal footbridge near Cedar Creek and the Rouge River that draws visitors on Halloween. Parapsychologist Christopher Schippers said he has recorded eerie sounds and paranormal activity at the site—its dark history dates to the mid-1800s—and is leading tours tonight.  FOX 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Education will honor 16 Blue Ribbon Schools — including City High Middle School in Grand Rapids and others from West Michigan — at the Michigan Board of Education meeting on Nov. 13. The Council for American Private Education has nominated three private schools as the state recognizes outstanding local academic achievement.  WOOD TV
  • A celebration and ribbon cutting was held Thursday for the new MEERA Regional Teacher Training Center—its state-of-the-art facilities are designed to help students build high-tech skills and prepare for future careers.  WOOD TV
  • The Grand Rapids Public Schools Turkey Trot reached a milestone with over 1,000 participants registered and will take place November 27 at 8:30 a.m. in downtown Grand Rapids—participants 12 and under can join a free Mini Trot.  FOX 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • If the government shutdown continues into November, nearly 3,000 Michigan children risk losing Head Start and low-income families may lose childcare—Kent County's program has funding until December while nine other programs could close by November 1.  ABC 13
  • Exodus Place, a Grand Rapids transitional housing program for men, will lose $27,000 per month in SNAP benefits starting Nov. 1 due to the federal shutdown, which will cut three meals a day for 145 residents—adding pressure on local nonprofits that also rely on these donations.  WOOD TV
  • Many Grand Rapids streets will enforce odd-even parking rules starting tomorrow at 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 1, when drivers must park on the odd side on odd days and the even side on even days from 1 a.m. to 6 p.m.—violators face a $20 fine and may cause delays in street cleaning.  WOOD TV

  • October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — survivors Keri Becker and Dana Calahan, who work in sports at Grand Valley State University, shared how early detection from routine mammograms helped them get fast treatment. Breast surgeon Dr. Jayne Paulson of Corewell Health said that getting a mammogram early can lead to better treatment outcomes.  WOOD TV

  • Michigan deer hunters have seen a 12% drop in success during the early archery season from October 1 to November 14—warm weather and fewer harvest reports have played a role. License sales are up 4% and coming frost is expected to slow a virus outbreak that is affecting deer numbers in some counties.  FOX 17
