Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 1st of November.
Good morning, Grand Rapids.
Grand Rapids' Oxford Trail project broke ground last month on the Southwest Side with input from Roosevelt Park and Black Hills residents and won a planning award from the Michigan Association of Planning for its community-driven design.
The $9 million project will add greenspace and recreational features along a 2.5-mile trail connecting neighborhoods to the Grand River — funded largely with a state grant from the American Rescue Plan.
Alive Again is Grand Rapids’ only year-round horror store that opened in October 2024 in the Creston neighborhood and shows off scary items like a life-sized Michael Myers figure and a Chucky doll.
Owner Carl Crocker fills the shop with thousands of movies, posters and other collectibles (it is open Wed-Sat from noon to 6 p.m. and on Sun from noon to 5 p.m.).
At this year’s Grand Rapids Comic Con, several authors including Jacqueline Carey, TL Shively, Marc Brown, and Daniel Kraus will join Hollywood stars, comic artists and cosplayers—Jean Davis from Holland will also share news about her upcoming works.
The event will highlight a mix of literary talks alongside creative exhibits and performances.
Cornerstone University has formed a council of nine leaders from healthcare, technology and faith-based groups to advise on meeting evolving workforce demands and shaping curriculum.
The council will guide the university in aligning training programs with market needs to prepare graduates for job success — a step that builds on the school’s commitment to practical education.
Michigan 211 is a free and confidential hotline that connects residents with local resources as SNAP benefits are set to pause today—residents in need can call 2—1—1 to speak with staff from one of seven regional centers.
The service aims to help over 1.5 million people who face food insecurity amid a federal government shutdown.
Northbound US 131 is closed between 68th and 100th Streets while southbound traffic will lose its left two lanes at 6 a.m. today in Byron Center as part of a two-year, $70 million project—MDOT says the work will finish late November and improve safety by rerouting traffic.
This project will extend on and off ramps to create a smoother ride along the highway.
