  • November is Adoption Awareness Month — local adoption agencies say many families hold misconceptions about the process and will host events to share accurate information and support prospective adoptive parents.  WOOD TV
  • In November, D.A. Blodgett-St. John's seeks families for hundreds of Michigan teens waiting for adoption—child welfare officials say that over 70 percent of adoptable children are teenagers. The agency offers ongoing help through its Adoptive Family Support Network so parents can manage the challenges of teen adoption.  WOOD TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After closing its tasting rooms last fall, Coppercraft Distillery reopened as CraftCo Distillery & Social House at 184 120th Ave. in Holland Township, now offering a remodeled tasting room with an expanded portfolio of award-winning spirits; the space hosted private events in October and will boost seating from 37 to up to 100 with added kitchen and service staff later this year and early next year.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Orkin released its annual ranking on Nov 1 that shows Los Angeles is now the rattiest U.S. city, with Chicago, New York, San Francisco and others also high on the list, and Grand Rapids rising +2 in its ranking. The report measured pest control calls from owner-occupied homes to track rodent activity across cities.  WOOD TV
  • NOAA forecasts that Michigan will have a classic winter from December through March as weak La Niña conditions bring an active storm track with snow, freezing rain, sleet, and rain. The outlook predicts colder air in the Upper Peninsula while parts of Lower Michigan may see above-freezing temperatures during storm passes — officials will update the forecast over the coming weeks.  MLive

  • Grand Rapids planners approved projects in October including two drive-thru restaurants near Woodland Mall, a new building for the Hispanic Center, and an orthopedic surgery center at the U of M Health-West campus—each plan details building size, hours, and parking. The approvals came from various planning commissions and set the stage for new dining, community, and health care options in the area.  MLive
  • A West Michigan veteran said that federal SNAP funding lapsed on November 1 left thousands waiting for food assistance. Judges ordered emergency funds to partly cover those benefits — and community groups like the Kentwood Little Free Pantry and Feeding America West Michigan are stepping in to help.  WOOD TV
  • Daylight saving time ends today at 2 a.m.—clocks are set back one hour and smart devices automatically update. The sun now rises earlier and sets sooner—locals are advised to check smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries.  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Grand Rapids mother, Arielle Mitchell, discovered a lump in her breast last December and followed her doctor’s advice for a mammogram—leading to an early diagnosis of stage one carcinoma that was later treated with seven weeks of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. She now feels well after reconstruction surgery and wants to encourage other women to get checked early.  ABC 13
