COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, November 7 at Tanger Outlets in Grand Rapids, the Christmas tree will be lit—hot cocoa, crafts, live reindeer and photo opportunities with Santa and Mrs. Claus will be offered during the free event from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the tree lighting scheduled for 6:00 p.m.  FOX 17
  • The Santa Claus Girls, a long-running holiday program, is getting ready to deliver gifts to up to 10,000 underprivileged children in Kent County this December. Approximately 250 volunteer drivers will take packages to homes on December 13 — each package includes handmade hats, mittens, books, toys and bedding.  FOX 17

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • News 8 is producing the second part of a three-part series ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald’s sinking on Nov. 10 that recounts how the Arthur M. Anderson’s crew and Coast Guard reacted when contact was lost and later searches revealed debris and wreckage—details that set the stage for a Wood TV+ special airing Monday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.  WOOD TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Grand Rapids Public Museum will host the annual Cultural Heritage Festival on November 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature music, dance, food, and vendors from over 30 groups to celebrate the city’s rich multicultural history.  MLive
  • The Sweet House, one of the oldest homes in Grand Rapids, was honored with a state historical marker unveiled by the Sweet House Foundation last month — the building, constructed in the 1860s near East Fulton Street — Lafayette Avenue, now hosts events as it marks its 20th anniversary. This recognition by the Michigan Historical Commission affirms its role in local history and community heritage.  WOOD TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in the Nov 4th election rejected a $230 million bond proposal for Rockford Public Schools. Superintendent Steve Matthews said the district will review the results—planning to speak with the community and find a new way forward after more than two years of work.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction is underway on a $2.2M South Rogue River Trail in Plainfield Township to link local trails with a network reaching Lake Michigan—paving and an $880k pedestrian bridge are set to continue through mid-November with the bridge finishing this spring. The project, managed by Dan’s Excavating, will adjust driveway access and one-way traffic to ensure safety during the work.  MLive
  • Grandville voters approved two proposals for the public school district—an operating millage set to bring in about $18.1 million each year for five years and a sinking fund that extends for 10 years to raise nearly $3.3 million for repairs, technology, and buses. The funding will support current staff levels and student programs while adding a tax on non-primary residences.  FOX 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Michigan Health-West introduced a new K-9 security team today to reduce workplace violence as three dogs—Buzz, Tukka and Cisa, Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd mixes—are patrolling with their handlers, a program funded by the hospital foundation. The dogs are trained to deter disruptive behavior and also help comfort patients during procedures.  WOOD TV
  • Three years after being diagnosed with a rare cancer and given only months to live, Mike Schaefer flew from near Houston to Michigan in October to receive histotripsy at UM Health-West — a treatment that uses sound waves to break up liver tumors and is part of a research project with Van Andel Institute. He now feels better and is part of ongoing studies to see if the treatment can help shrink cancer in others.  ABC 13
  • Local infectious disease specialists urge parents to vaccinate their children against the flu as the peak season begins, noting that last year saw about 30,000 hospitalizations and 14 pediatric deaths statewide—warned experts advise proper hygiene and vaccination for everyone 6 months and older.  WOOD TV
