COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new indoor playground and community center named Sensory Park will open in the spring next year at 2023 Eastern Ave. SE near Burton Street in Grand Rapids—designed to offer sensory playrooms, mental health services, and special events for kids with autism and their families. Owner Erikka Kneeland is hosting a fundraising event on Nov. 30 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a $50,000 goal and has received a $15,000 grant from the Urban League.  WOOD TV
  • John Ball Zoo announced guests can now see Juniper, a three-month-old snow leopard cub exploring her outdoor habitat after being introduced earlier this week. Born at the end of July to Yuki and Mylo—Juniper is one of about 250 snow leopards in U.S. zoos and is listed as a vulnerable species by officials.  WOOD TV
  • Paws With A Cause finished a $10 million expansion of its headquarters near Wayland on Nov. 5, 2025 and held a ribbon cutting to show off new training rooms that mimic home settings and a 4,500-square-foot housing area for dogs. The nonprofit now can shorten training time for assistance dogs—helping clients in more than 20 states.  WOOD TV
  • This weekend many events are planned in West Michigan with a basketball opener at Van Andel Arena on Friday night, a holiday tree lighting at Tanger Outlets starting at 5:30 p.m., and a free drone show over the Grand River on Friday and Saturday. Additional activities include Restaurant Week, a fencing cup at the Grand Rapids Fencing Academy, an improv festival in Kalamazoo, a holiday market in Holland, and a ski swap at Mulligan’s Hollow—offering a busy schedule for locals.  WOOD TV
  • The City of Zeeland will host its annual Christmas parade on Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m., featuring over 60 walking groups — including marching bands and a visit from Santa Claus along a route that starts at Main and Centennial and ends at Central and Maple. Before the parade, caroling with Tuba Christmas will begin at 5:45 p.m. and a Christmas tree lighting will take place at 6:15 p.m.  ABC 13
  • A free drone light show with 500 drones will begin today and continue tomorrow over downtown Grand Rapids and along the Grand River as part of a Veterans Day tribute hosted by veteran-led Creative Community Entertainment. The event near (555 North Monroe Ave.) also includes a Veteran Creative Arts & Crafts Fair and free booth space for veteran entrepreneurs, with funds raised supporting veteran programs.  MLive
  • Yesterday, Paws with a Cause held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil its $10 million expansion at its Wayland-area headquarters, adding training spaces like life-size apartments, a cafe, and a store—designed to prepare service dogs for tasks under real-life conditions. Visitors can still tour the upgraded campus as a family-friendly open house is scheduled for November 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  FOX 17

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hotel room prices in downtown Grand Rapids are rising on busy nights when events like concerts and conferences push up demand, with some rates nearing $400 while typical rates average $190. Hotel operators say they raise prices to cover higher costs for labor, food and supplies — a move that keeps their businesses competitive despite more new hotels opening.  MLive
  • Between 2019 and 2024, 22 new hotels opened in Kent County and many older hotels lost revenue, with 58 of 68 hotels earning less than they did in 2019. Overall, hotels brought in a record $274.1 million in 2024—Airbnb made $11.9 million and major hotels like Amway Grand Plaza saw growth with strong group bookings.  MLive

  • Metro Grand Rapids native and former Bronco Marshawn Kneeland died at 24 on Nov 6 — police say his death is being treated as a possible suicide.  WOOD TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • On November 3rd, the Sheldon Clubhouse rehabilitation program helped individuals with significant mental health diagnoses by offering targeted support services.  WOOD TV
  • Doctors report a rise in enterovirus cases in Grand Rapids and West Michigan that are causing respiratory and stomach illnesses—sometimes leading to serious complications in young and immunocompromised patients. They advise washing hands with soap, watching for warning signs like dark urine and shortness of breath, and contacting a doctor if symptoms worsen.  FOX 17
  • The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed two more bird flu outbreaks in Ottawa County commercial flocks on Wednesday, making five outbreaks since Oct. 8—four in commercial flocks and one in a backyard flock.  WOOD TV
