  • Due to uncertain SNAP benefits, a Grand Rapids nonprofit saw its food pantry traffic triple as more families turned to SECOM for essential support—open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to offer donations like diapers and fresh produce. Local stores and programs like Double Up Food Bucks provide extra ways for residents to stretch their dollars amid ongoing food insecurity.  FOX 17
  • City officials announced that the 37-foot Christmas tree will be installed at Rosa Parks Circle on Nov. 12 at 5:30 a.m.—the installation is expected to take four hours; the tree will be lit on Nov. 22 after the Santa Parade starts at 5 p.m.  WOOD TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ellie Mitchell, a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, will host a ribbon-cutting at her shop Bead & Powwow Supply in Cascade Township today to launch a new embroidery section with over 500 shades of DMC floss, snacks, giveaways & discounts for visitors. She will also lead a free beading workshop on November 11 at the Grand Rapids Public Library Yankee Clipper branch to support year‑round Indigenous craft.  MLive
  • Rhiannan Sibbald has completed new murals at the Comstock Park Library that show local plants and animals inspired by her walk in Dwight Lydell Park last summer. She worked with Lions and Rabbits at a paint party that let local children help paint large, simple shapes — bringing art and nature together for the community.  FOX 17
  • News 8 is running a series of stories leading up to Monday’s 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking—concluding with a WOOD TV+ special airing at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Monday.   • Singer-songwriter Jack Johnson will perform at Acrisure Amphitheater in downtown Grand Rapids on July 5, 2026 as part of his SURFILMUSIC Tour with special guest Hermanos Gutiérrez. Construction of the 12,000-seat venue near US-131 is on schedule and tickets go on sale next week.  WOOD TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • West Michigan high school students are working with Ottawa County on a citizen science project to study road salt pollution in the Pigeon River watershed—data they collect will help target efforts to reduce chloride levels and protect water quality. The project at the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District’s Careerline Tech Center also gives students hands-on experience to prepare for future science careers.  MLive

  • Restaurant Week is underway in Grand Rapids for its 16th year, with more than 70 restaurants offering 80 different menus from November 7 to November 15. Diners can choose meals at fixed price points (25, 35, or 45 dollars) and check in for rewards while enjoying a variety of cuisines.  FOX 17

  • After Friday night district championships, voters now can help decide the 13 On Your Sidelines MVP, with the winner set to be revealed on Nov. 14. Voters have until noon on Nov. 13 to choose from five nominees — East Kentwood quarterback Kayd Coffman, Lowell quarterback Logan Dawson, Kelloggsville running back Keyontae Gibson, Kenowa Hills running back Lundon Hampton, and Forest Hills Northern quarterback Owen Ostipow — for the honor.  ABC 13
  • The Michigan High School Esports Federation hosted the state regional finals in Grand Rapids on November 7, where high school teams competed in esports (a rapidly growing activity in schools).  WOOD TV
  • The West Catholic Falcons won the MHSAA Division 5 football district final when they stopped the Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars short of the goal line on a two-point try in overtime Friday at Catholic Central Athletic Complex—moving on to regionals.  MLive
