COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mel Trotter Ministries held its annual Turkey Drop Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at several West Michigan sites including Celebration Cinema Grand Rapids North and South, their Jenison Thrift Store, Muskegon Rescue Mission and Gateway Mission — they aimed to collect at least 5,000 frozen turkeys for those in need — and they challenged the community to exceed that target amid rising costs.  WOOD TV
  • Dolly’s Delights, a bakery that opened in downtown Grand Rapids in September, will host a free Thanksgiving brunch for the homeless on Nov 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in partnership with Downtown Grand Rapids, Inc.—the meal will feature pancakes or biscuits and gravy, a dessert, a drink and a winter warming kit.  WOOD TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Christkindl Markt vendors finished decorating their booths yesterday and opened for business to welcome the holiday season. A Santa Parade is scheduled for this weekend and will be followed by a tree lighting ceremony.  WOOD TV
  • The Grand Rapids Public Museum will close its 'Fashion + Nature' exhibit on Nov. 30 after nearly four years of presenting 10,000 locally donated garments and showing fashion’s impact on the environment—while the museum returns its annual LEGO displays that feature local landmarks and interactive scenes. Visitors can plan a visit soon to see both exhibits before the change takes effect.  MLive
  • Project leaders announced that the Acrisure Amphitheater will host ten shows for its inaugural season with Lionel Richie headlining the grand opening show and tickets for his concert going on sale Friday—more concerts are expected to be announced soon as the venue prepares to open in May.  WOOD TV
  • The Christkindl Markt is back in Grand Rapids for its third season, with over 60 vendors setting up European-style booths early Wednesday morning—selling food, drinks, and holiday decor. The market will run Wednesday through Sunday with final days on Dec. 22 and Dec. 23—offering pop-up booths where new sellers can try out their goods.  ABC 13
  • The International Wine, Beer & Food Festival returns to DeVos Place on Nov. 21—22 with over 1,200 beverages available alongside local restaurant pairings and tasting sessions led by experts. A VIP preview supporting Hospice of Michigan runs today at DeVos Place Grand Gallery from 6—9 p.m.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Grand Rapids Public Schools Turkey Trot was held on November 27 at Van Andel Arena and featured a 5K run/walk along with a mini trot for kids under 12 starting at 8:10 a.m.—the event also added a food drive where families in need benefited from donations collected outside the arena by a giant inflatable turkey.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deer-vehicle crashes increased in Kent County, and officials with the Deer Management Coalition are launching a plan to cut collisions by 1,050 in two years — the plan also calls for increasing annual hunter harvests and other measures. A study by Grand Valley State University and local surveys show more deer are dying in crashes while residents say deer numbers have grown.  WOOD TV
