COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A vacant lot in Cascade Township will be redeveloped as part of an expansion of Tassell Park, adding a pedestrian crossing and amenities like a natural playground, river overlooks, and themed areas. Construction will begin in spring 2027 to create a safer outdoor space & support local businesses.  FOX 17
  • Harbor Humane is showcasing four kittens for adoption on Pet Adoption Tuesday, including Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Packard and Plymouth. Their names were inspired by a junkyard find.  FOX 17

BUSINESS NEWS

  • ALDI announced it will open its first Byron Center store at 8319 Clyde Park Ave SW, featuring a 20,161 sqft building + 90 parking spots after unanimous site plan approval. The company has not shared an opening date and will provide updates as construction nears.  MLive
  • Women entrepreneurs are sharing a vacant building in the Creston neighborhood off Plainfield on Spencer Street to run businesses and support each other's success + they call themselves 'Girl Bosses.' Owner Charity Bruce said one suite remains and more hubs will open soon citywide.  FOX 17

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy advises Grand Rapids drivers to check tire PSI daily, warm up cars for 30 to 60 seconds, keep tanks half full, and remove roof racks to boost fuel efficiency this winter—fill up soon as local prices average $2.78 before a rise later this week.  FOX 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alto Elementary students are making a final push for the Toys 4 Tots drive as the school spirit challenge nears its end. With posters displayed & emails sent to parents, the kids aim to earn a pizza party for the winning class while ensuring every child enjoys a holiday gift.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Safety Service Patrol helps stranded drivers with a three-minute response in Grand Rapids. The red van (with nearly 600 stops in October) blocks lanes to keep motorists safe until help arrives.  ABC 13
  • A capacity crowd filled the Zeeland Township hall Tuesday, Dec. 9, as residents voiced opposition to a planned $300 million solar farm proposed by RWE — which would span up to 1,100 acres in Zeeland and Jamestown and could change local farmland — while township planners work on new regulations.  MLive
  • City officials in Lowell debated building a data center that could lead to a $10 million water plant expansion (designed to boost capacity from 1.5 to 3 million gallons per day) to meet increased usage, while a public hearing has been rescheduled for January at Lowell High School.   FOX 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new mutated flu virus, H3N2 subclade K, is spreading across the US and has been identified in 86.8% of samples in Kent County according to the CDC. The Kent County Health Department says the flu shot remains effective and urges residents to get vaccinated before holiday gatherings.  ABC 13
  • Kaylin Burton, a first-year MSU medical student, is testing a groundbreaking residency by living in a senior community to learn firsthand dementia care at Holland Home Raybrook Campus. The program fosters mutual care by building empathy as Burton and residents share everyday interactions (valued by both for their personal insights).  ABC 13
